Amritsar train accident Live updates: At least 59 people were killed and 72 injured after a train ran into crowds at Joda Phatak crossing in Amritsar where a large number of people had gathered to watch Ravan effigy burning on Friday evening. The train was coming from Jalandhar to Amritsar when the accident occurred at Joda Phatak where at least 300 people were watching 'Ravana dahan' at a ground near the tracks. The Punjab government has announced a state of mourning and massive rescue operation was carried throughout the night. The injured have been admitted to the Civil Hospital in Amritsar. President Ram Nath Kovind expressed shock over the tragic accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the tragedy is "heart-wrenching". Stay tuned with my blog for latest updates.

Relief operations for Amritsar train accident victims in full swing; Train services affected on Jalandhar-Amritsar route :

@VPSecretariatIn Punjab, relief and rehabilitation efforts for the Amritsar train accident victims are on in full swing. People injured in the train accident last evening are being treated at various hospitals. 

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said, 59 people were killed and 72 were injured in the accident. The mishap occurred when a crowd watching the burning of Ravana's effigy near railway tracks was run over by a train. 

Captain Amarinder said, action will be taken against those responsible for the tragedy once the magisterial inquiry ordered by the state government is complete. He was talking to mediapersons after reviewing the situation on the ground and meeting the injured in three hospitals.

Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha has blamed the organisers of the Dussehra celebrations for the train accident. Mr Sinha who visited the accident site, said, whenever such functions are organised, the local administration gives permission but in this case it was not done so. Mr Sinha said, people should restrain from organizing such events near railway tracks in future. 
Meanwhile, the train services on Jalandhar-Amritsar and Pathankot-Amritsar sections are yet to become normal. Talking to AIR News, CPRO, Northern Railways, Deepak Kumar said, services of 67 trains have been affected.

Punjab CM orders immediate release of Rs 3 crore to district collector of Amritsar for payment of ex-gratia to the families of the deceased.
